Valpak

The UK's largest compliance scheme for the Producer Responsibility (Packaging Waste) Regulations

Key responsibilities

  • Take legal responsibility for the compliance on behalf of 3,000+ UK companies with the regulations
  • Purchase and coordinate daily collections of glass from 8,500 licensed premises, and work with 11 local authorities and trading merchants

The challenge

Valpak had commissioned the services of a development consultancy to automate the collection, management and tracking of membership submissions, and trading partner contracts for recycled packaging waste.

Early in the development phase, the supplier began to experience difficulties in providing expert technical resources for the project, jeopardising both the quality and stability of the application, as well as the target deadlines for completion.

The solution

Initially, Solution 7 was appointed to extend the data collection capabilities of the compliance management system to the web, which would allow members to enter and view their packaging waste submissions online.

However, prior to the successful and timely deployment of this application, Solution 7 was invited to review the status of Valpak's original project and assume responsibility for completing its development.

In addition, the company was briefed to develop a materials trading application, which would finalise the automation, and integration with finance, of its three core business areas.

With its now completed system, Valpak can provide the following capabilities to its members and management team:

  • Web-based collection and reporting on membership packaging waste
  • Calculation of membership obligation
  • Matching of membership obligation to proof of recycling evidence
  • Management and tracking of recycling notes submitted by members
  • Management and tracking of contracts for waste collection and materials traded
  • Automated billing of members
  • Reporting to the EA (Environmental Agency England and Wales), SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency), and EHS (Irish Environment Heritage Service)
